What Are Purple Succulents?

Purple succulents are by far my favorite plants. I first discovered them about ten years ago in my gardening book. They were described as having "a profusion of purple flowers" that were also "sometimes eaten." At the time I assumed they were referring to the seeds, but no, they were referring to the plants! I still have the book and I would be very surprised if anyone knew what the plant was called at all. In this article I will describe the purple flowers, the plant, and how to grow them properly in your garden.

This plant is a member of the mint family, Viburnum. As a member of the mint family it is often confused with other plants such as the false violet or blue violet plants. The name "purple flower" is given to them because they have purple blossoms, unlike most other members of the mint family which have white blooms. They are a woody plant, so they grow best in rich soil that also has a lot of light.

Like most members of their family, purple succulents are epiphytes, which means that they need a lot of water. You should be able to see tiny holes in the leaves, which are evidence of water retention. They also are very prone to rotting so you want to pick them before they rot. The leaves are shiny green, very like a radish. These succulents are not true cacti. Although they can be used as cacti cuttings to grow another plant.

If you want purple flower plants, the best ones are those with purple petals and white edges around the blossom end. It is common for them to have a white "sink" at the base of the leaf. The purple part of the leaf is usually much wider than the rest of it. If you get any purple petals that have an unusual shape or texture - call the gardener before trying to grow it as a plant because it may not be a purple succulent.

Purple heart among the other varieties of purple flowers has a lovely fragrance. It can be grown in any kind of soil with low fertility. It is susceptible to root rot so if the soil it is planted in gets very dry, there is a chance it might die. One needs to make sure that the soil it is planted on has good drainage before planting a purple flower in it. If this is not done then the root system can rot and the plant can die.

Most purple succulents are self-limiting, which means they cannot support themselves. The best kinds of these plants are those with a thick woody stem and the ability to bear alone. If you plant a purple flower with other forms of plant like lettuce, chives, peas, beans or radishes, it will not do well. You need to give it enough room to grow up to be able to flower.

Plant it with other forms of plants like wheat, alfalfa, clover, beans, peas and dill to give it room to grow and flower. If you have a shady spot where it can get some sun, then plant it there. If it's too hot or cold, just remove the flowers from the plant something else. It's a good idea to put the pot in the shade since purple plants do not do well in direct sunlight.

To take care of your purple flower plants, you will need to provide them with extra light and water. Try to only water them when they're not getting dried out. The soil should stay moist until it gets to about an inch away from the top of the pot. In between each watering, make sure to repot the purple plants. Repotting once every year or so will keep your plants healthy and looking beautiful.
